LOWWよりご挨拶

このたび、熟慮を重ねた末、2026年8月29日をもちまして、LOWWのギャラリースペースを閉じることを決定いたしました。

このお知らせには、寂しさと感謝、そして何よりも希望があります。

私たちはこれを終わりとは考えていません。これからも歩みを続けていくために必要な、一つの変化であり、かたちを変えて次へ進むための決断です。

2023年のオープン以来、LOWWでは毎月約2本の展覧会を開催し、新進から国内外で活躍する作家まで、それぞれ異なる視点や表現を持つ多くのアーティストをご紹介してきました。

しかし振り返ってみると、私たちにとって最も大切だったのは展覧会そのものではありませんでした。

作品と鑑賞者が出会い、見知らぬ人同士が言葉を交わし、新たな協働が生まれ、ときには思いがけない対話が広がる。そして、展覧会ごとに束の間のコミュニティが立ち上がる。そのような無数の出会いこそが、LOWWという場の本質だったのだと思います。

LOWWは創設以来、「thereby creating perspective」という言葉を掲げてきました。

それは商業的なスローガンではなく、私たちの静かな意思表示でした。

展覧会とは、何かを一方的に伝えるものではなく、人の知覚やものの見方を少しだけ揺り動かすものだと私たちは信じています。劇的な変化ではなくても、展示を観る前と後で、世界の奥行きや複雑さ、あるいは可能性がほんの少しでも違って見えるのであれば、その展覧会は役目を果たしたのだと思っています。

芸術は答えを与えるものではありません。

問いそのものを変えるものです。

私たちは「現在」を生きていると言います。しかし芸術は、その単純な時間の捉え方を絶えず揺さぶります。

何百年も前につくられた作品が、いまなお鮮烈に私たちへ語りかけることがあります。一方で、昨日完成したばかりの作品も、誰かの眼差しに触れた瞬間から、すでに未来へ向かい始めています。

作品は、生まれた瞬間だけに存在するものではありません。
鑑賞され、解釈され、誤読され、記憶されるたびに、その意味は更新され続けます。
そう考えると、芸術とは「もの」である以前に、時間との関係そのものなのかもしれません。
だからこそ私たちは、創造とは未来とのコミュニケーションであると信じています。

この考え方は、芸術の価値についての私たちの姿勢にもつながっています。
歴史は確かに幾人かの名前を記憶します。しかし、名前が残ることだけが価値を決めるとは思っていません。
創造の本質は、まだ存在しないものを想像し、それがどのように受け止められるか分からないまま世界へ差し出す、その行為そのものにあります。

旅先で、光や空間、静けさのあり方を一変させるような建築に出会うことがあります。
けれど、その建築家の名前を知らないことも少なくありません。それでも、その体験は長く私たちの中に残ります。

心を動かすのは、作者の名前だけではなく、その出会いそのものだからです。

芸術は、説明されるよりも先に、人を動かします。
振り返れば、LOWWは単なるギャラリーではありませんでした。

それは、人と人、人と作品、異なる世代や領域、文化や土地が交わるための条件をつくる試みでした。
私たちは展覧会をゴールではなく、対話が始まるための出発点だと考えてきました。活動を続ける中で、その対話は一つの場所だけに留まるものではないと感じるようになりました。だから、ギャラリーを閉じることは後退ではありません。

私たちにとって、それは新たな広がりです。

これからLOWWは、日本国内はもちろん、世界各地のアーティスト、ギャラリー、コレクティブ、キュレーター、美術機関、そしてさまざまな独立した活動と協働しながら、新しい実践を続けていきます。

一つの住所ではなく、人と人との関係の中に存在するプラットフォームとして。
場所としてのギャラリーはなくなっても、その思想は続いていきます。

この数年間を通して私たちが学んだことがあります。

文化を支えているのは場所だけではありません。

寛容さ、信頼、好奇心、そして共に想像しようとする意志です。

私たちがこれまで行ってきたこと、そしてこれからも続けていきたいことは、すべて一つの信念から生まれています。芸術は、正しさによってではなく想像力によって、合意によってではなく新たな視点によって、社会を少しずつ広げていく力を持っている。

そう信じています。

東京の片隅にあった小さなギャラリーまで足を運んでくださった皆さま、本当にありがとうございました。
展覧会をご覧いただき、何度も足を運び、対話を重ね、ときには賛同し、ときには異なる意見を交わしながら、この場所を育ててくださったことに、心より感謝申し上げます。

また、作品を託してくださったアーティストの皆さま、共に活動してくださったキュレーター、ギャラリスト、執筆者、コレクター、フォトグラファー、設営スタッフ、メディア関係者、そしてLOWWを信じ支えてくださったすべての方々へ、深く御礼申し上げます。

この場所は、皆さま一人ひとりによって築かれた場所でした。

LOWWは8月29日まで通常通り開廊しております。

最後の一日まで、ぜひお気軽にお立ち寄りください。

LOWWは終わりません。

ただ、存在のあり方が変わるだけです。

また別の場所で、別の空間で、そして新たな対話の中で、皆さまとお会いできることを楽しみにしています。

A Letter from LOWW

After much reflection, we have decided to close the physical space of LOWW on 29 August.

This announcement comes with both sadness and gratitude. Yet above all, it comes with hope. We do not see this as an ending, but as a necessary transformation—a change in form that allows us to continue moving forward.

Since opening in 2023, LOWW has presented nearly two exhibitions every month. During this time, we have had the privilege of introducing the work of emerging and established artists alike, each with distinct voices, concerns, and ways of engaging with the world. More importantly, we have witnessed countless moments in which artworks met viewers, strangers became collaborators, conversations unfolded unexpectedly, and a temporary community emerged around each exhibition.

Those moments have always been the true work of the gallery.

From the beginning, LOWW has been guided by the phrase "thereby creating perspective." It has never been a slogan in the commercial sense, but rather a quiet statement of intent.

We have always hoped that an exhibition could alter perception—not necessarily through spectacle or certainty, but through subtle shifts in awareness. If someone were to leave the gallery seeing the world with even a slightly different sense of depth, complexity, or possibility than before they entered, then we believed the exhibition had fulfilled its purpose.

Art does not provide answers. It changes the questions.

We often speak about living in the present, yet the experience of art continually resists such a simple notion of time. A work made centuries ago can remain startlingly alive today, while a work completed only yesterday may already begin to belong to the future the moment it encounters another person's gaze.

An artwork is never confined to the moment of its production. It continues to unfold through every viewing, every interpretation, every misunderstanding, every memory it leaves behind. In this sense, art is less an object than an ongoing relationship with time.

For this reason, we have always believed that creativity is fundamentally an act of communicating with the future.

This belief has also shaped how we think about artistic value.

History naturally remembers certain names, yet we do not believe that permanence alone determines significance. The meaning of creative practice lies not only in recognition or legacy, but in the act of making itself—in the willingness to imagine something that did not previously exist, and to offer it to others without knowing how it will be received.

When travelling, one may unexpectedly encounter a building that quietly transforms the way one understands light, space, or silence. Often, we never learn the architect's name. Yet the experience remains with us for years. What matters is not authorship alone, but the encounter itself.

Art moves us long before it is explained.

Looking back, LOWW was never simply a gallery. It was an experiment in creating conditions for encounters. It was a place where different generations, disciplines, languages, and geographies could briefly intersect. We believed that exhibitions were not destinations but starting points—places from which conversations could continue elsewhere, long after the lights had been turned off.

As our activities evolved, it became increasingly clear that these conversations could no longer be contained within a single physical location.

Closing the gallery is therefore not a retreat. Rather, it is an expansion.

In the years ahead, LOWW will continue working with artists, galleries, collectives, curators, institutions, and independent initiatives across Japan and internationally. Instead of being defined by one address, we hope to exist through collaborations, exchanges, publications, exhibitions, and projects that emerge wherever meaningful relationships can be built.

The gallery may disappear as architecture, but it continues as a way of thinking.

If there is one thing these past years have taught us, it is that culture is sustained not by buildings alone, but by generosity, trust, curiosity, and the willingness to imagine together.

Everything we have done—and everything we hope to do next—comes from a simple conviction:

that art has the capacity to expand society, not through certainty, but through imagination; not through agreement, but through perspective.

To everyone who travelled to our small gallery, tucked quietly away in Tokyo, thank you. Thank you for making the journey. Thank you for spending time with the exhibitions, for returning again and again, for your conversations, questions, disagreements, encouragement, and friendship.

To every artist who entrusted us with their work, every curator and gallerist who collaborated with us, every writer, collector, photographer, installer, supporter, and member of the media who believed in LOWW, we extend our deepest gratitude.

This space existed because of all of you.

Our doors remain open until 29 August, and we warmly invite you to visit us once more before this chapter comes to a close.

This is not the end of LOWW.

It is simply the beginning of another way of being.

We look forward to meeting you again—somewhere else, in another space, through another conversation.
